Darius and Kayla Boyd:

Darius Boyd epitomises everything the Garden City Gala hopes to represent.

The Garden City gala’s mission is to inspire people to recognise mental illness and take action against it. This is exactly what Darius Boyd has done.

Most recognise Darius as an outstanding rugby league player, the Broncos captain, a Queensland and Australian star. In the game of rugby league Darius in a proven winner but what is most inspirational is Darius’ achievements in the biggest game of all - life.

Darius Boyd has transformed himself from the man infamous for delivering a sixty second press conference and someone who shunned the media and often was abrupt to now being an affable, well articulated role model and ambassador not only for rugby league and the Broncos but also for mental health.

In 2014 Darius Boyd faced his demons checked into a mental health rehab facility and his life on and off the field has flourished.

He is the inaugural ‘Mates in Construction’ ambassador – a charity which helps men in construction and mining who are struggling with mental health.

On the rugby league field Darius Boyd is often setting up tries, saving tries and leading his team off the field he’s doing the same thing his leadership in the battle  with mental health will do more than save tries and win football games – it’s saving lives.

As the Broncos fullback we always see his combinations with Andrew McCullough or Anthony Milford and it’s a team effort to achieve a single goal. It’s no different off the field, when it comes to mental health it’s Darius’ wife Kayla who is his ‘team mate.’

Often when you hear and read about mental health, it’s often centred around the individual – but those around the individual play a key role.

Kayla Boyd has been Darius’ rock when it comes to conquering his demons. Kayla, like Darius is passionate about helping people conquer mental health. Her love and support of her husband during his darkest times has been the catalyst to help him see the light.

Kayla is a star in her own right. A proud kiwi gal who is living her passion and owning her purpose leaving positive imprints on people's hearts. Inspiring others through her squares of the gram. From her style, to fashion and fitness, her raw and unedited approach to living a true and honest life as a mother to Willow, wife and as a woman - launching her blog 'Adored by Kayla Boyd' in 2015. Working as an ambassador, lifestyle blogger, influencer, host and public speaker.

Since 1898, Defiance Flour has been an iconic name in the Toowoomba region for the milling of flour. The main flour Milling building was constructed in 1911 and still stands today as an impressive piece of turn of the century architecture, and is a key centerpiece of the Toowoomba CBD.

The Building, now known as 'Blank Space',  is used for functions and events and is wrapped with railway enclaves, clerestorey warehouses and intimate milling buildings to form a rugged yet mesmerising architectural fabric.
