The Garden City Gala:
Proudly supporting The Toowoomba Hospital Foundation & The Drought Angels
Steven Bradbury & Kamal Sarma
Our first special guest speaker for this year's Garden City Gala is Steven Bradbury. The popular term 'doing a Bradbury' was created after the extremely lucky circumstances that saw Steven win a gold medal in the 2002 Winter Olympics, becoming the first person in the Southern Hemisphere to win a Winter Olympic event.
Steven Bradbury had a successful decade of speed skating where he was a 4-time Olympian, won an additional bronze medal and unfortunately had two life threatening skating injuries. His determination and desire 'to stick it out' is what ultimately ended up in his success.
After retiring from speed skating, he created his own successful custom speed skate and cycling shoe company which exported to over 20 countries before he sold the company in 2012. He is currently the Director of the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia as well as a successful motivational speaker.
Steven offers such a positive message about persistence and resilience. His ability to overcome adversity has taught him many different strategies for dealing with mental health issues. After nearly dying twice, he offers such a unique perspective on why it is important to keep on trying. We can't wait to hear his 'never give up' message at this year's Gala.
Another one of our special guest speakers for this year’s Garden City Gala is Kamal Sarma. His story is one of personal loss and transformation of emotional turmoil to rediscover himself and uncover his purpose. You may have already seen Kamal share his wisdom about mental health and resilience on his Ted Talks or other interviews. He embodies exactly what the Garden City Gala stands for and truly offers you a new perspective on life.
Kamal is an extremely interesting person with so much insight on dealing with mental health issues. From training as a monk for 6 years to becoming a venture capitalist, Kamal has learnt so much and offers a unique perspective on coping with life’s obstacles.
Kamal is currently the Chairman of the RUOK Thinktank and Co-Founder of the Institute for Mental Resilience. He is also the Founder and Director of Rezilium, a strategic leadership firm who in addition to their corporate work, assists organisations that rescue and rehabilitate child sex workers and child soldiers.
As well as being a successful businessman, Kamal is also a well-known author having written three books including the international bestseller Mental Resilience: The Power of Clarity – How to Develop the Focus of a Warrior and the Peace of a Monk. Kamal was also recognised for his peace work between the Chinese and Tibetans in 2008.
